Admissions

Admission to single subject and double subject bachelor programmes

Basic admissions criteria for all bachelor programmes at the Department of English and American Studies consist of the successful completion of two written exams.

1. LP Test (in Czech, Test SPF) - i. e.   Learning Potential Test with an emphasis on knowledge in the Humanities and Social Studies.

For the contents of the LP Test see the admissions information here

2. English Language Test

For the contents of the English Language Test see the information below.

Both of these tests must be written in person at Palacký University in Olomouc.

For SINGLE-SUBJECT and DOUBLE-SUBJECT ENGLISH PHILOLOGY programmes
only the two aforementioned tests are required (the LP Test and the English Subject Test).

For the ENGLISH FOR TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING  study programme, an oral exam is also required in addition to the aforementioned tests (the LP Test and the English Subject Test) . The oral exam takes place on the days following the written exams, and only the applicants who have passed the written examination are invited.

English Language Written Test:

The test is prepared and organized by the Department of English and American Studies of the Philosophical Faculty UP. The exact date, time and place of the test will be specified in the invitations.

Required knowledge:

1. at least the B2 level of English based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

2. a practical knowledge of normative English grammar

3. vocabulary adequate for common situations in language communication

4. a general knowledge of culture and history

The test consists of grammar exercises, fill-in-the-gap exercises, reading comprehension exercises and questions about the culture and history of English-speaking countries. Dictation is not a part of the examination. A maximum of 100 points can be obtained in the written test. The duration of the test is 60 minutes. Applicants with higher scores have precedence in admissions. The final result for the double-subject study programme depends on the results in both entrance exams.

A sample English Subject Test is available for download here. Additional samples can be obtained at the department's Open Days.

Applications for Single Subject and Double Subject Master’s study

M.A.  in English Philology (Single Subject and Double Subject study programmes)

The basic requirement for admission to the Master’s study programme of English Philology is a B.A. or equivalent in English (English Philology or non-Philology: Single Subject study programme or Double Subject programme in combination with another subject). A high level of English (European C1 level) as well as a thorough knowledge of theoretical linguistics, Anglo-American literature and culture (ideally in the extent of a Bachelor’s study of English Philology) is required.

The admission test consists of an oral interview.

During the oral admissions interview, the applicants will introduce the content of their Bachelor’s study programme (they must present their transcripts) and their views regarding further work in the field. If they meet the basic requirements for the Master’s study programme but their Bachelor’s study programme is in some ways incompatible with a thorough grounding in English Philology, an individual study programme might be required, which would allow them to fill gaps in their competence in the fields of Linguistics and/or Literature.

Master in English for Interpreting and Translating

Talentové zkoušky zkoumají motivaci a testují schopnosti uchazečů v oblasti překládání a  tlumočení (překlad z AJ do ČJ, konsekutivní tlumočení z AJ do ČJ).
